Sight for Sore Eyes - Hoodlems on Brass

OK, kidding, they are not hoodlems at all! Although they do talk and dress like homies.) They are in fact more than skilled musicians and composers, brothers, and sons of none other than Sun Ra's Philip Cohran. If this doesn't make you want a brood of your own, nothing will.

Sat 21st April

A hugely eclectic playlist this week with a guest mini-mix by Tempo Tantrum (aka Reza) who'll be playing alongside Leftfield, Booka Shade, Afrika Bambaata and James Zabiela this Saturday at the Brixton Academy.

Tempo Tantrum started as a club night, it was so successful it became a record label. Previously the Tempo Tantrum crew supported Leftfield on their UK tour.

Ancient Egypt in London

Egyptian Lover coming to the UK, April 21st!

We're more than excited to interviewing the super don, a week before Waveytones fly him to London.
Since his early success as part of the L.A dance scene at the start of the '80s, Egyptian Lover's minimal synth and electro programming have become synonymous with the West Coast pioneering music scene.

Saturday's Free Lab Radio features an interview with the great man himself, and a mini mix of delicious minimal from Waveytones's Unlikely who will be performing on the night.

Here are the gig details:

Egyptian Lover - Live
DJ Stingray - 2hr Set
DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn

Drums Of Death - DJ Set

Archetype, The Button Pusher is Back - with Headgear

Squarepusher, sounding himself and better.

Looks like he may have learned something from Serbia's little-known group Nipple People, who I photographed (right), Tron and Tobin's ISAM. But this is no mere copy, the man is evolving:

Squarepusher on Dark Steering:
"For a while I had apocalyptic nightmares about trails of nuclear missiles in the night sky. So I aimed to recreate that strange combination of exhilaration, terror and sadness both visually and emotionally through this piece. It lead to the idea of a spacecraft leaving earth at vast speed to escape, but oddly the music also made me think of it flying through a library. So I generated the visual aspect such that, as the piece progresses, it seems as if the viewer is ever accelerating through massive corridors of books."

Is this illegal?

My new heroes, billboard hijackers, Desire Obtain Cherish question businesses' right to
a) blot out the skyline
b) programme your mind

In LA, many billboards remain unchecked as apparently the authorities, are scared to go into it. Check the soundtrack, too.

piss take ~/~ milk shake

I love a bit of cultural tokenism. The track is better than the video, but here's the context for this piss take/milk shake...wait for his armpits.

Grow Your Ears

LABoral art centre, Gijón, Spain present a visualisation in sound. Crunch, crunch, lush, lush.

Carmensita

Thank god. Here is Banhart and his girlfriend, Portman, prancing around in what I'd class as presently much-needed colourfulness.
