Free Lab Takeover - DSM, Iran

Producer and DJ DSM, or Sasan b.1994 in Iran where he lives, returns to the airwaves with a truly fantastic mix that aims to elicit different types of feelings and emotions in the listener.

Using traditional Persian music, the sounds of nature sounds and his signature deep-house rhythms, DSM has edited some of the tracks and made this bespoke mix sent from Iran for Free Lab Radio this week.

Check out his last mix for us here. Since then, DSM has gone on a superb tangent into experimental sound. We hope Resonancefm has influenced him in some way!

Broadcasts on air,  on digital and online Saturdays 11:00 - midnight on Resonance104.4FM in London. Repeats Tuesdays 04:00-05:00am GMT.

We are also on Fridays 19:30-20:30 GMT on ResonanceFM's offshoot station Resonance Extra, which broadcasts on digital and online in Brighton, UK.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Dance is a Neuroscience

Complex movement.  Sound generation. Kinesiology. Meaningful gesturing. Rhythmic synchronisation. Wordlessly communication. Brain synchrony. Rehabilitation and therapy. the magic of mutual gaze.

Dance is a Neuroscience

A mix by Fari B of the most sonically intriguing dance tunes in this year's playlist, plus new Nov-Dec releases. Moving through genres and sub-genres from 8-bit to Neurostep, it's a selection to end 2015 with.

Dance is a marriage of the representational capacity of language and the rhythmicity of music. Even though dance is a fundamental form of human expression, neuroscientists have given it relatively little consideration. The past decade, however, researchers have conducted the first brain-imaging studies of both amateur and professional dancers. These investigations address such questions as, How do dancers navigate though space? How do they pace their steps? How do people learn complex series of patterned movements? 1)

Streaming online and broadcasting on air on 104.4FM, at 11-midnight GMT (3-4am GST).
Repeat: Tuesday 4-5am GMT (7-8am GST)

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mix by Fari B

This week the sounds of the best electronica and experimental music from Fari B's listening rack. Elements of just a peppering of dubstep, epic, hip hop, contemporary classical, neurohop, moombhaton and even a remixed booty anthem.

Intelligent music for today's listener, dance in your bedrooms, dance in your cars, dance on the train with your headphones on, dance with your feet, your hands your head, but don't ignore the beat for that's when we've been reduced to nothing more than a brain carried in a body. Sway yourself into the present.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Endurance City

This week we explore minimal house, tech and synth-pop tracks tracks with reliably repetitive forms, and how these give people clubbers the confidence (and therefore the freedom) to dance?

Their mesmeric beats, by their very repetition become a kind of meditation, a small box in which the dancer moves shoulder to shoulder to a driving, seamless mix along with everyone else in a kind of flamboyantly stylish step class, where endurance rather than variety is part of the experience. Think of Techno Viking if he'd been an international corporate head hunter living in Dubai.

Here in Dubai, the dance scene is varied, but only within the parameters allowed by the brackets in which different social groups operate. The Ethiopians have their club, the Indians theirs, the Russians, the Singaporeans have theirs. The expat Europeans, Australians, South Africans and Americans mostly dance to chic, boutique music. That's the best way to encapsulate the genres that we're thinking of - clean, reliable, at first hearing possibly featureless, but after a while, a freedom appears within the framework.

Looping On....Mieux - Video for New Release 'Rush'

Ahead of their forthcoming album Are You Happy, ? - Mieux are happy looping away in this latest vid. The credits reveal a lot of it is the brainchild of one person. Props to him.  Of course the answer is that a lot of us aren't happy because we don't know how to make others happy, the first foundation stone of being happy at all.

So the next Q is: does making this album make Viennese band Mieux happy?  The answer lies in what effect is has on you.
Check out their older stuff. You may've heard Fishing before if you're an intelligent listener.

Unknow What You Know - This Week's Free Lab Radio

This week your #FreeLabRadio producer played out on the beach here in Dubai, to a crowd of academics heavily involved in the electronic arts and young creatives living here in the UAE. ISEA2014, a roaming electronic arts festival is hosted this year by the United Arab Emirates. One visiting sound artist from Canada told me last night, "I would never dance to Love Shack, but that was the best damn remix I ever heard".

As a nod then to the possibilities of reinventing the way we hear familiar music, this week we present the Magic Drum Orchestra mix made for their release by bandleader Bigga Bush.

Broadcasts Saturday night 11-midnight, repeats Thursday 2am on 104.4FM across London, or online everywhere else.

Do you love the beats? The band have released their own drum sample pack.

Paul Noble - Free Lab Radio Podcast

Paul Noble. Free Lab Radio Mix. by Fari on Mixcloud

Free Lab Radio broadcasting 11-midnight, Saturday nights on Resonance104.4FM. Fari Bradley’s guest is London-based Paul Noble, an active DJ, radio producer, music consultant and producer. He’s worked on Monocle 24, The White Cube, The Observer, The Green Man Festival and dance floors around the world. His directive tonight is to dig into the depths of his music collection for the truly bizarre.

Aboriginal Treaty Song - Club Mix

We're loving the retro 90s sound and the dynamic video of this Treaty song remixed by Filthy Lucre.

Yothu Yindi (Yolngu for "child and mother") are an Australian musical group with Aboriginal and balanda (non-Aboriginal) members formed in 1986. The group were highly active established the Yothu Yindi Foundation in 1990 to promote Yolngu cultural development, and produced the annual Garma Festival of Traditional Cultures and as of May 2007 ran a Dilthan Yolngunha (Healing Place). We like the way they use bilma (ironwood clapsticks), hear the original below the remix with its potent English lyrics.
(Then Prime Minister) Bob Hawke visited the Territory. He went to this gathering in Barunga. And this is where he made a statement that there shall be a treaty between black and white Australia. Sitting around the camp fire, trying to work out a chord to the guitar, and around that camp fire, I said, "Well, I heard it on the radio. And I saw it on the television." That should be a catchphrase. And that's where 'Treaty' was born. —Mandawuy Yunupingu, lead singer and guitarist Yothu Yindi 8 July 2004
Melbourne-based dance remixers Filthy Lucre's Robert Goodge and Gavin Campbell adapted the song, their version peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA (Australia's BBC) singles charts. In May 2001 the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), as part of its 75th Anniversary celebrations, named "Treaty" as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. In October 1992, the then (another) Prime Minister government awarded Yothu Yindi a $30,000 grant but sadly the money was only used to travel to New York, where the band performed at the UN launch of International Year for the World's Indigenous People. Far better if they had performed at a concert with wider impact, a wider audience and less marginalised programming.

Lead singer and guitar player Yunupingu said he drank up to four cartons of alcohol a day.
"Alcohol was a big influence in my life. I didn't know what harm it did to my body. Before I knew, it was too late".
You'd think someone would've had the wherewithal to tell him. In December 2012 Yothu Yindi were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, with Peter Garrett (former member of Midnight Oil).
In June 2013 Mandawuy Yunupingu died of renal failure. While languages of the aboriginal are disappearing songs like this help us to consider a culture different form ours, which was and still is mostly just brushed aside.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Freedom Fry HiFI

11-midnight on Resonance104.4FM.

Tonight's bespoke mix for Free Lab Radio comes all the way from USA. Originally a Dubliner, now resident in Philly, collector and recorded sound enthusiast, Freedom Fry HiFi is chasing the crackle. From home burnt music to acetates and 78" vinyl, he plays world and 60's electronic compositions, as well as home recordings. Catch more of his shows on the internet.
In this age of quickly generated, pumped up digital files, it's refreshing to have someone willing to freak out on the dancefloor to more distant sounds. There's an undeniable fidelity in these obscure recordings, a pleasure to hear.

Tonight's Free Lab Radio Show - Darkfloor is a Genre

Tonight, 11pm, an hour of solid music mixed by Scotland-based Nomina, as a live set for Mantis Radio, a station that specialises in darkfloor electronica, in May 2013. Nomina is Tam Ferrans who lives in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Like many modern-day producers he toys with a series of monikers, worried fans of one won't be fans of the other. Thus he also records as Mitoma, and as Altered:Carbon (great name for a band) with Andy Paterson (theAudiologist) to create even more abstract, hip-hop based music. On tonight's show we're treated to sparse garage material reworked as Ambient unCrunk, darkfloor electronica,

Ferrans also co-founded the netlabel Section 27 one which his releases are amongst the 100+ they've produced since 2009. This year he also made this remix of Stormfield’s Collapsing System EP for Combat Recordings; a London based label who released the EP.
As Mitoma he'll soon be releasing a 3rd album Iso:Forms and has new Nonima material in the pipeline.
