Free Lab Radio Podcast: Dance is a Neuroscience

A mix by Fari B of some of the most sonically intriguing dance tunes in this year's playlist, plus new Nov-Dec releases. Moving through genres and sub-genres from 8-bit to nu-disco to Neurostep, it's a selection to end 2015.

Dance is a marriage of the representational capacity of language and the rhythmicity of music. Even though dance is a fundamental form of human expression, neuroscientists have given it relatively little consideration. The past decade, however, researchers have conducted the first brain-imaging studies of both amateur and professional dancers. These investigations address such questions as:
How do dancers navigate though space?
How do they pace their steps?
How do people learn complex series of patterned movements?

Playlist:
1.Zedanmer (feat. Eat Static, Ethiopiques) by Invisible System

Streaming online & broadcasting on air on 104.4FM, at 11-midnight GMT (3-4am GST).
Repeats: Tuesday 4-5am GMT (7-8am GST)

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mix by Fari B

This week the sounds of the best electronica and experimental music from Fari B's listening rack. Elements of just a peppering of dubstep, epic, hip hop, contemporary classical, neurohop, moombhaton and even a remixed booty anthem.

Intelligent music for today's listener, dance in your bedrooms, dance in your cars, dance on the train with your headphones on, dance with your feet, your hands your head, but don't ignore the beat for that's when we've been reduced to nothing more than a brain carried in a body. Sway yourself into the present.

Tonight's Free Lab Radio Show - Bolly & Glitch Disco

Tonight we pay homage to the link between kooky Bolly wood disco and glitchy electro disco tunes, featuring two new tracks by Scanner, tracks with Bollywood steel guitar, and work by TEP, Dugong (following on from last week's show devoted only to women producing their own music) and several tracks to blow the bottom of your trousers right into the air ...

Tune in 11-midnight on 104.4FM in London or www.resonancefm.com/listen elsewhere//////

One of today's tracks :

Wraetlic - Rats \\.../// [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Taken from Alex Smoke's "WRAETLIC" album forthcoming on Convex Industries, RATS is a mesmeric new video pushing the tensions around pixellation of thought, dimensions, presence and that increasingly topical discussion of how-far-is-the-image-real, all matchingly evoked in his music. Listen to past work by Alex Smoke as Wraetlic (the name of both his side project and album).

After listening to Rats about ten times, I'm asking myself can this genre of haunting minimal techno only be stark? Africa-HiTech certainly had some buoyant aspects to their last album 93 Million Miles but it has the same overtones. We are not expecting anyone to defy their musical style, the question is more about how many palettes this genre affords us. How to be minimal then, dodge melancholia and keep your chin up? Send in any samples you've come across that you feel achieve this, we'll likely play them on air and give you a shout.

Free Lab Radio Tonight ~ Oct 27th

After last week's look at Neurostep, we break free from genre dabbling so that tonight's Free Lab Radio explores Chilean electronica, Persian surf and electro flamenco...

Oh ya!

☖⚆⚇...≳≲...BEIRU`TRONICA....≳≲...⚆⚇☖

Sampling tracks from our forthcoming live set launching Share Beirut at the Radio Beirut Cafe.

LISTEN IN!

For a longer set we steam live from 7-9pm BST (9-11pm local time) Fri 5th Oct. on Radio Beirut.

As usual tonight's is an eclectic set, with Middle Eastern references and parallels. There's also some Grim Skunk, Delta 5 and other joys in there.

By the way...did you know that everyone in Lebanon has a cat?

Polish Experiments, Spaceship on Venus

Tonight, we sample Polish experimental audio from the 60s and 70s with a smattering of lively tunes designed to make you move and think at the same time. Fancy that. See the Polish-East German production (pictured) FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS (Der schweigende Stern)- 1960 in which recordings from the debris of the 1908 Tunguska meteor turn out to be a spaceship from Venus. To get to the drama, you have to jump the lengthy intro, itself debris from the once dominating male voice in literature where dry, lengthy descriptive introductions from the omnipresent narrator were the norm. Check the emperor Nehru character in the white hat, and the terrible dubbing.

A Modern Old School

A night of modern old-sounding dance music to celebrate the debut London performance of VHS Head on 10th September. A lot of the show will sound like: "why-don't-you-turn-off-the-radio-and-go-out-to-hear-this-live-instead".

CEEPHAX ACID CREW, VHS HEAD and LEE GAMBLE play exclusive
live sets at the launch of brand new night XENOGLOSSY on Saturday,
September 10, at the Shacklewell Arms, Dalston. Xenoglossy
'aims to explore the mind-meltingly colourful area between various
forms of modern-day electronic music-making'.

Ceephax Acid Crew with their disgracefully hedonistic approach to analogue acid rave are joined by VHS Head for his first London performance. VHS Head sounds like an 80s keyboard with the frog in it's throat playing for the soundtrack to the Twilight Zone. We love him, hopefully after the show, you will too.

Arab Electronica - Levitate!

A selection of more unusual and experimental Arabic and Middle-East inspired music for Saturday night. The show is informed by Fari B's recent trip to Exit festival and a collection of politically charged titles and content.

In the second half of tonight's show, we feature a variety of compositions created on a very unusual optical synthesiser, the ANS. Designed by Evgeny Murzin in 193, the ANS was an early Russian synthesiser that used an optical scanning head to control a bank of sine wave oscillators. The programme features works by Alfred Schnittke, Edward Artemiev taken from the album "Electroshock Presents: Electroacoustic Music"

See http://www.theremin.ru/archive/ans.htm for more information on the ANS.

Summer Stunner

Tonight we sample Middle Eastern keys from John Farah (as he's on his way to UK to perform for us at Cafe Oto London, July 15th), Arab griminess from me (a track I made for Exit Festival) and plenty of other dance-orientated excitement leading us up to the pinnacle that is Saturday midnight.

TU PEUX LE CROIRE by Fari B by FariB

Until 1am Chris Weaver is putting out a one hour live performance by The Dismantlers - Chris Weaver, Lepke B, Peter Rockmount live at Raven Row art Gallery London.
