IRAN IRAQ IKEA

Wow. It's been ages since I felt this good pressing play.

Although,

I don't do the radio show at the moment, or anymore, just had to send this out there.

Lo/ive instruments. Just the right amount of of detraction and cyniscism to make those sugary/ sunrise sounds as intellectual as they need be!

Hope I get to see those four throats doing their thing one day soon. Real byrds.

Trump this Horror Show - New Release by Birds of Hell

Norwich-based Birds of Hell's lyrics are an expulsion of desperate anger, in a world where click-bait is juxtaposed with horror stories and 'stupid questions asked to the internet'.
"Played live, Let's Have The Windows Open digresses into semi-improvised lyrics and over the last few months Donald Trump has been the focus of these ad-libs."

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mutant Jukebox

Iranian born Londoner Shervin Shaeri began his career writing music to picture for artists, directors, and photographers.

The creative director of the creative audio agency Mutant Jukebox, specialising in bespoke music composition, Mutant Jukebox has created this guest mix for Free Lab Radio.
"On being asked to create my first ever mix for Free Lab Radio I instantly felt a little tinge of nostalgia. In the early days of the station - which at that time resided in a tiny studio in Londons tin pan ally - where I applied for a volunteering program through uni, and was kindly taken on by the team. With a some experience in engineering and audio tech I quickly was able to help out. For me, a time of discovery.

My interest in experimental music started a couple of years earlier with a visit from a cousin of mine and her husband who lived out in LA. I clearly remember the day that I felt my 'sonic awareness' open up. Both had gone off for a couple of days and left me with a file of cds, and so i dived in. With hindsight it was a turning point, so the selection is a nod to that time featuring tracks by Alvo Noto and Ryoji Ikeda of Raster-Noton, Warp artists such as Boards of Canada and Plaid and Skam artists such as Bola and Quinoline Yellow."

Track List:
1. Even Spring - Plaid
2. Nothing Happens In June - Ulrich Schnauss

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Muqata'a Ù…ُقاطعَØ© (Boycott), Palestine

This week's Free Lab Radio features a bespoke mix by Palestine/ USA-based music producer and performer Muqata'a (translates as Boycott). Muqata'a used to be part of Ramallah Underground until he began working solo on at first hip hop and now a more blended mix of hip hop and experimental electronica.

Hear his latest dark electronica track here, below.

We've featured Muqata'a in the past and last November 2015 we travelled to Abu Dhabi's Noise of the Middle East festival where we played the same stage. With a modest array of sound manipulating gear, Muqata'a had the audience swaying to his mesmeric, unhurried sounds, sat on Persian carpets before the stage.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Bedroom Research

When producers and musicians make music that's released for free, there's a freedom in that. There's not the same kind of pressure, no contract to be beholden to; creativity is at the centre of the project.

So when we found Bedroom Research, a small label in the south of France releasing what it called "twisted electronica" we were elated by the level of creativity, the anarchic innovation and the high standard of production and artwork.

Amongst the many digital producers is one singer, we took some of the best tracks for a mix tonight on Free Lab Radio, but of course there are many more, listed below, than we could squeeze in this hour.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Disquiet, Afternoon Music for Day or Night

Afternoon Music for Day or Night

This week founder of Disquiet Marc Weidenbaum brings us a special mix for Free Lab Radio. This seasoned selector and music reviewer put thought into this mix, as he is familiar with the Resonance104.4FM audience and has unfathomable archives, created by himself, at his disposal.

"This is mix of afternoon music that can be listened to at any time of the day — the work played here, 21 tracks in all by 13 artists, is generally ambient and electronic in nature, and yet it’s fairly rhythmic at the same time, some of the tracks more explicitly so than others. There are fractal algorithms from Erika Nesse, and refrigerator drones by Nystada. There’s elegantly layered sameness by Marcus Fischer and fourth-world blues by Yasuo Akai. Several of the recordings heard here are drawn from the music community called the Disquiet Junto, which I’ve moderated since 2012. The hour starts off with some brief dank techno miniatures by Vladimir Conch. Conch’s pieces are so brief, between 23 and 38 seconds each, that I’ve chosen to repeat a few of them, turning the five short original tracks into a suite of nine that begins where it ends."

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Electro-Congo

Konono No1 Meet Batida
This week to mark a new release, we are broadcasting a contemporary congolese dance music Free Lab Radio special.

Selected new electro-Congoloese alongside tracks by legendary band Konono (formed 1966) from Kinshasa, DRC who released "Konono No1 Meet Batida" this month. For the album Konono joined forces with acclaimed Angolan/ Portuguese artist Batida for the album. "Konono No1 Meet Batida" released on April 1, 2016 and was recorded in Batida’s garage-cum-studio in Lisbon, and reflects the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan music life. Also featured this week are Congolose drum 'n bass and other forms of right-sounding electronica.

"At the African Club, there are no bad tracks." Fari Bradley, 2016.

About Konono No.1 The grammy award winning trio combine three electric likembé (a traditional instrument similar to the thumb piano or mbira) with voices, dancers, and percussion instruments  made out of items salvaged from a junkyard (this is something close to our heart). For some reason they also distinguish themselves by using a microphone carved out of wood fitted with a magnet from an automobile  and a gigantic horn-shaped amplifier!

Repeats Tuesdays 04:00-05:00am GMT.

THIS WEEK'S FREE LAB RADIO - WISHBONE, JOE PETERSEN

SATURDAY 19th March

Sampling tracks made by teens, for example: Joe Petersen is a 17 year old producer from New Orleans signed to Donky Pitch. Influenced by his parents; respected Jazz musicians, we sample Petersen's output so far. Influences are American folk, Cuban rhythms, hardcore and electronic music, with numerous self released mix tapes of original material, he has also released on Black Link Sound.

This six track EP on cassette and digital download is rather wild, a melding of sounds and genres; 'squashed hip hop' and dance floor tracks fuse together with synth melodies, guitars orchestral drones, and dance floor tracks create a 'restless energy' that gives the music a sound that is rather unique.

Tracklist
01 Wishbone
02 Considerate
03 A Lesson Before Dying
04 Brothers
05 Dixie Boy
06 Assault And Battery

Free Lab Radio Podcast: Dance is a Neuroscience

A mix by Fari B of some of the most sonically intriguing dance tunes in this year's playlist, plus new Nov-Dec releases. Moving through genres and sub-genres from 8-bit to nu-disco to Neurostep, it's a selection to end 2015.

Dance is a marriage of the representational capacity of language and the rhythmicity of music. Even though dance is a fundamental form of human expression, neuroscientists have given it relatively little consideration. The past decade, however, researchers have conducted the first brain-imaging studies of both amateur and professional dancers. These investigations address such questions as:
How do dancers navigate though space?
How do they pace their steps?
How do people learn complex series of patterned movements?
