This Week's Free Lab Radio - Candoco Dance, Laurie Anderson - Nils Frahm

This week we listen to the music of Nils Frahm and Laurie Anderson to mark the Sadler's Wells re-creation of Set and Reset/Reset, 1983 by the Candoco Dance Company. Candoco dance who include fully-abled and different bodied dancers, restage this landmark contemporary piece called Set and Reset by abstract, improvising choreographer Trisha Brown. This ground-breaking production is performed to a contagious score by renowned multi-media artist Laurie Anderson. Long Time no See originally performed with Richard Landry. Set, costumes and part of the lighting were also by artist Robert Rauschenberg.

This is accompanied by a series of dances set to existing tracks by German producer Nils Frahm.

The Set and Reset/Reset project examines the shifting nature of choreography in relation to underlying structures that anchor a dance to itself. The process of re-construction (as opposed to replication) is a negotiation between freedom and limit – an exploration of possibility as the dancers create a new version of Trisha Brown’s landmark choreography.

Abigail Yager danced with Trisha Brown and her company 1995–2002, while she was also Trisha Brown’s musical assistant. As a reconstructor of Brown’s choreography, Yager has worked with Candoco (London, England), Lyon Opera Ballet (Lyon, France), at La Monnaie National Opera of Belgium (Brussels, Belgium), Le Festival International d’Art Lyrique (Aix-en-Provence, France).

Yager taught the Candoco Dance Company dancers exact sequences from the original choreography and later guided them in an extensive improvisation process whereby they used the same set of instructions that Brown gave to her Company in 1983: keep it simple, act on instinct, stay on the edge, work with visibility and invisibility, and get in line. Set and Reset/Reset is a combination of the 2011 and the current company’s choreography.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Turkish Ladies on Records

 

 Polish record collector Kornelia Binicewicz lives in Turkey where she began Ladies on Records, a listening and digitising and uploading project for currently Turkish psychadealica from the 60s and 70s featuring the voices of Turkish women of the time.  The 60-70s saw a massive explosion in music all over the world which gave women the voice and platform with which to become renowned and express themselves not only musically,but also in fashion and the arts.

Binicewicz left her work in festivals in Poland to pursue a life in music in Turkey where she is now based. She was director of MiŚ Documentary Film Festival about Music for 8 years and program manager of the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow for a while. Binicewicz calls her interests “Various cultures and worlds caught in dusty records and blurred memories” and explores Turkish female music through avidly collecting records, interviews, DJing and writing.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Kairo is Koming, Ismael Takeover

A Free Lab Radio takeover by producer Ismael from Cairo, Egypt of his own and other tracks mostly made in Cairo.  Ismael, an electronic musician from Cairo, Egypt is part of the arts collective Kairo Is Koming (KIK).

For this ambient, electronic radio show, Ismael recorded a mix featuring works from his two EPs Odd On Out, and PreData, with works buy artists from Cairo and the region. Long and rolling, sometimes distorted sounds, with Arabic and Maghrebi tones over ambient industrial and sometimes domestic noise is what you can expect from Ismael. The set was made in March 2016, Egypt.

Fritz Von Runte's experimental David Bowie mixpiece made on the eve of Bowie's death features abstract sounds, spoken word, remixes, reworkings and lesser known tracks.
 Von Runte, a DJ and Producer in Manchester, UK releases his own material under the anti-war non-profit label Marshall Records and is a remixer of British songwriters.

In 1996 Fritz was just 20, he founded Shalalá Records, an independent record label for electronic music, whose catalogue so far has reached over 80 releases.

"His work as a DJ was also very successful and prolific – Fritz even played Ibiza (that was when it actually meant something).  Fritz von Runte’s life has always been connected to music, one way or another. His father was a obsessive record collector, Jazz, Big Bands and Orchestras. He gave Fritz his first record player, a monophonic (!) portable one, at the age of 4 (!!). As a boy, Fritz was always the one responsible for directing the music in parties. He didn’t have a video game, never got into sports, basically was more interested in music than anything else. At the age of 15 he became a professional DJ, warming up parties in warehouses for thousands of people. When he was 18 he bought his first drum machine and one year later got a job in a studio, when he began to produce music."

Dance is a marriage of the representational capacity of language and the rhythmicity of music. Even though dance is a fundamental form of human expression, neuroscientists have given it relatively little consideration. The past decade, however, researchers have conducted the first brain-imaging studies of both amateur and professional dancers. These investigations address such questions as, How do dancers navigate though space? How do they pace their steps? How do people learn complex series of patterned movements? 1)

Free Lab Radio - Live, with Tapes

As we met young producer Tapes this month, we've invited him to ResonanceFM studios to do a live thing...it might be tapes it might be vinyl. But it will be Tapes.

His new release is on vinyl with EM Records "No Broken Hearts on This Factory Floor", as marketed by Boomkat. Here are his previous ones, the first of which was in 2009 in which the tracks were transferred to tape, and back again for effect.

The record "No Broken Hearts..." comes with a printed 12" x 12" double-sided insert, a compendium of what Boomkat call Tapes' "frayed and wayward dub exploits on Japan's always wonderful EM Records ahead of his full debut LP with Honest Jon's."

We're just looking forward to hearing his version of Olivia Newton John in 'Phyzikal Dub', because I'm addicted to a very cool remix of that song ourselves....

Since 1968, Trojan Records has led the way in presenting the very best in classic Jamaican sounds. The labels releases have featured the best of Jamaican talent, with the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots andThe Maytals and The Inner Circle all included on its illustrious roster.

Earl began DJing in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton and was heavily influenced by the Trojan releases of the time. Today Earl Gateshead and Trojan Sound System tour the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Recent shows include Glastonbury, Outlook, Boomtownfair, Bestival, Rototom Festival and club events at London’s biggest venue; Fabric.

In the late 70s, in the spirit of the times Earl built his own sound system at the world famous Dive Bar in Soho, where he established a reputation across London. Earl had a 20 year residency at The Dive Bar, which was sadly bought to an end in 2002 when the venue was closed. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he was the resident Roots Reggae specialist.

In 2000 Earl organised and performed at a series of events called “Reggae Nights”. These legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, which lead him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the country and in high demand from international Reggae artists. He then went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others. 

Invited to give a lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo, Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull.

11-midnight tonight we're airing the one and only mix put out by DJ Two Fingers this year. The reason it merits attention, apart from being a great mix, is that it's the only thing Two Fingers has produced this year, claiming "a year in the studio". This would not normally be significant but that Two Fingers is an alias for super-producer Amon Tobin. Tobin was on tour last year with his hyper-surreal DJ 'experience' ISAM. We caught the show at Camden Roundhouse, it was impressive, all enveloping and distant. The team working with Tobin created the most astounding projection mapping show perhaps of all time, while the DJ himself was mostly hidden inside the wall in a cube, only partially visible at moments during the show.

Two Fingers was originally a collaboration with fellow producer Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. Their first eponymous release came out in 2009 and heavily featured UK vocalist Sway.
The second album, Stunt Rhythms was a solo work by Tobin and was released worldwide by Big Dada in 2012. The most popular track from Stunt Rhythms is Fools Rhythm, included in Ninja Tune's 20th anniversary "XX" box set,
Recent works include the theme music for the BBC America/Space original series Orphan Black, composed by Two Fingers and also the release Vengeance Rhythm which comes with the most brilliant teddy-bear slaughter video (pictured, and posted here at the time) in 2012.

Tonight's mix "TF DJ SET SEPT 2013", is a self-released free download made available in January 2014. It was produced by Tobin in Montreal, and comes with this proclaimer: "As this will be mainly a studio year for Amon we are posting one of 2013's Two Fingers DJ sets for you to download. Fond memories, good times. Thanks to all who stepped out and got down to this!"

About Time - Gary Newman Back in the Spotlight with Superb Retro Video

Logan Owlbeemoth's video for this song by Numan features effects by artist/musician Omebi Velouria. Superbly, this video comes with an explanation of how it was made, the nod to the Numan's roots in the analogue age: it was made with a Tachyons + video glitch synth effected live via a HI-8 camera and a CRT television "to create triply, blurry, VHS-style images of Gary Numan as he sings the song." No computer-based post-production was used at all. Fab!
Numan's recent-ish album - his 17th studio album -, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) released worldwide in October 2013. It was his first album to reach UK Top 20, since the early 1980s. Numan announced that there will be a special one-off live show in London in his birthplace of Hammersmith, November 2014 at the Hammersmith Apollo. Where has been all this time? In USA with his family, he married a member of his fan club from Sidcup and they named their seocnd daughter Persia. Sounds right! If you're only a teenager now or not from UK you might not have heard of him, he was really just a shy kid with a lot of spots who became known for wearing a lot of white makeup (only administered to cover said spots apparently) and for the excellent song and what was to become his trademark almost robotic performance below - ARE FRIENDS ELECTRIC?
