THIS WEEK'S FREE LAB RADIO - WISHBONE, JOE PETERSEN

SATURDAY 19th March

Sampling tracks made by teens, for example: Joe Petersen is a 17 year old producer from New Orleans signed to Donky Pitch. Influenced by his parents; respected Jazz musicians, we sample Petersen's output so far. Influences are American folk, Cuban rhythms, hardcore and electronic music, with numerous self released mix tapes of original material, he has also released on Black Link Sound.

This six track EP on cassette and digital download is rather wild, a melding of sounds and genres; 'squashed hip hop' and dance floor tracks fuse together with synth melodies, guitars orchestral drones, and dance floor tracks create a 'restless energy' that gives the music a sound that is rather unique.

Tracklist
01 Wishbone
02 Considerate
03 A Lesson Before Dying
04 Brothers
05 Dixie Boy
06 Assault And Battery

Broadcasts on air,  on digital and online on Resonance104.4FM

From The Savages to Habibi, the music is selected by the Sisters for you to hear.

This October Southwark is witness to a rumbling of equality-demanding and anti-capitalist sentiment and action this month, as a series of workshops and events occur alongside a group exhibition of artworks made on residency at Miss Pokeno's studio.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Vaporwave

Vaporwave, a mushy, so-cheesey-they-are-cool series of adapted samples of '80s & '90s TV infomercial and corporate muzak, made today. On this week's show we play both good old fashioned, hi-fidelity vaporwave and progressive (adapted and made on new hard and software) vaporwave.

Samples are might be pitch or tempo shifted but they are still recognisable. Reimagined 80s Microsoft advert with a whole load of obsessive compression and reverb, tracks are often very short...Vaporwave examines the vapidity of mass mainstream media and its promises, the short-sightedness of libidinous 90s yuppie culture and celebrates the perennial nature of advertising most of its producers suffered growing up....

Other similar genres are chillwave, grave-wave,
sea-punk, witch-house and of course one that the ResonanceFM performing collective explored quite a bit in the 2013-14 hauntology.... Vaporwave often crosses into genre we've looked at before on Free Lab Radio, such as Chiptune and Brostep.

Featured this week are:
Shisa and Choongum (released on cassette)
Oneohtrix Point Never
Fortune 600
REVERB LITE
Greeneyed Meganekko
Space Arabica
VHS Logos and more....

Since 1968, Trojan Records has led the way in presenting the very best in classic Jamaican sounds. The labels releases have featured the best of Jamaican talent, with the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots andThe Maytals and The Inner Circle all included on its illustrious roster.
Earl began DJing in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton and was heavily influenced by the Trojan releases of the time. Today Earl Gateshead and Trojan Sound System tour the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Recent shows include Glastonbury, Outlook, Boomtownfair, Bestival, Rototom Festival and club events at London’s biggest venue; Fabric.

In the late 70s, in the spirit of the times Earl built his own sound system at the world famous Dive Bar in Soho, where he established a reputation across London. Earl had a 20 year residency at The Dive Bar, which was sadly bought to an end in 2002 when the venue was closed. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he was the resident Roots Reggae specialist.
In 2000 Earl organised and performed at a series of events called “Reggae Nights”. These legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, which lead him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the country and in high demand from international Reggae artists. He then went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others.

Invited to give a lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo, Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull.

Sudori an album by Pino Minafra with an inset essay by art historian and editor of "Jazzthetik" Markus Muller; referencing ethnologist Claude Levi Strauss saying

"Listening to Pino Minafra is about reactivating our hidden perceptive faculties, in the widest sense, its about discerning planets during daylight and to suddenly realise that these planets must have spun out of one of those black holes in the contemporary music universe that no one of us , due to the so-called age of information, expects anymore."

From Milan then, we hear the track Trib-Bal.

Plus author and musician Kirk Lake, who we recently played on Free Lab Radio for his collaboration with UK Pakistani artist Shezad Dawood, sent in his CD the album The Black Lights, from which we sample two tracks Clarke Vs Tyson and the unusually titled "Finish your drink so I can get your glass to the wall there's something more interesting happening next door."

Free Lab Radio Podcast - Booman vs. Iraq

Is there a place where naive fine art and home studio production meet...?

Tonight we sample an entire album by Bambooman, UK who has his latest release 'Dulcet' on Sonic Router. As a tangent, we end with two Iraqi folk songs to mark the first ever UK exhibition of Welcome to Iraq, the Iraq Pavillion contribution to the last Venice Biennial. It is the first ever show at Venice to feature artists from inside Iraq since 1976.

The work in Welcome to Iraq, currently on show at South London Gallery, is mostly all made from found objects and materials, as formal art education in Iraq still has not recovered since the foreign invasion and artists are generally self taught. From cardboard to recycled tires the sculptures are effectively parallel to the sampling and re-appropriated field recordings of young Bambooman.  Like these Iraqi artists Bambooman uses a colloquial audio palette to create some of the most interesting beats we've heard in a while.

Time to clean our ears!

A taste of the latest free releases and experimental tracks for the discerning listener. Featured are GTA Hoffman, Sophia Mitiku, Nostalgia 77, Mohamad Azimi, Nostalgia 77, [XRS] (Xerxes de Oliveira) Chinawoman and Natural Self. If there's time, we've a classic to spin.

Thanks to then to these artists for the free and more importantly worthwhile, music.

Each Free Lab Radio is comprised of hours of listening and surfing, plus plenty of silence; all the tracks we don't play. Fluid technocrunk and Scrambled Sonics

Who said no one listens to entire albums anymore? Tonight's Free Lab Radio is a double album Xpoloration of two albums, one by Miguel Baptista Benedict and one by Koloah. We move between clear-cut programmed bass-driven beats, and cut up experiments that show an irrelevance for such formalities. Yet there are threads that bring them together, you dear listeners, will likely discern.

Koloah (Dmitriy Avksentiev)is all of these: Kievbass, Hyperboloid, Cut, Soulection, RAW, Car Crash Set and Robox Neotech from Kiev, Ukraine. A constant producer he's now on tour with his synth, performing with Daedelus and the like. Labels he works with are Kievbass, Hyperboloid, Cut, Soulection, Raw.

Miguel Baptista Benedict on releases on Brainfeed, Aphonia and Ninjatune. Based in Los Angeles, United States Benedict is a noise artist, vocalist and composer. He's been grandiosely called "a continuation of the dadaist movement" but in truth he's just a brave, dedicated talent with an ear for musical dissonance, hauntology and home made recording. Of his latest album he said " It’s supposed to be pronounced “Superb Children” I was trying to go for multiplicity but also individuality.”

Koloah meanwhile describes himself as "Music producer, video director, editor, screenplay wrighter, alcohol drinker, robber, brawler, hidden duke." Sounds tiring. His downtempo tracks carry textures such as Pets Can Rock, that suggest the link between the two.
