New Podcast - Kairo is Koming

 A Free Lab Radio takeover by producer Ismael from Cairo, Egypt of his own and other tracks mostly made in Cairo.  Ismael, an electronic musician from Cairo, Egypt is part of the arts collective Kairo Is Koming (KIK).

For this ambient, electronic radio show, Ismael recorded a mix featuring works from his two EPs Odd On Out, and PreData, with works buy artists from Cairo and the region. Long and rolling, sometimes distorted sounds, with Arabic and Maghrebi tones over ambient industrial and sometimes domestic noise is what you can expect from Ismael. 

The set was made in March 2016, Egypt.

Free Lab Takeover - DSM, Iran

Producer and DJ DSM, or Sasan b.1994 in Iran where he lives, returns to the airwaves with a truly fantastic mix that aims to elicit different types of feelings and emotions in the listener. 

 Using traditional Persian music, the sounds of nature sounds and his signature deep-house rhythms, DSM has edited some of the tracks and made this bespoke mix sent from Iran for Free Lab Radio this week.

Check out his last mix for us here. Since then, DSM has gone on a superb tangent into experimental sound. We hope Resonancefm has influenced him in some way!

A bespoke set of house music, mixed in Iran for Free Lab Radio, by DJ Nesa Azadikhah. 

 "I used different styles of tracks for this mix: house , nu disco, techno, deep house... all tracks were chosen from international music. The mix adapts to changes in mood for the audience. It was mixed in Ableton Live, and I have also edited and overlayed some of the tracks.
The drawing here is a still frame of a video animation which I used last time on Free Lab Radio also as it's a source of inspiration for me. It was a collaboration between my sister and I, using collage as a technique."

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Endurance City

This week we explore minimal house, tech and synth-pop tracks tracks with reliably repetitive forms, and how these give people clubbers the confidence (and therefore the freedom) to dance?

Their mesmeric beats, by their very repetition become a kind of meditation, a small box in which the dancer moves shoulder to shoulder to a driving, seamless mix along with everyone else in a kind of flamboyantly stylish step class, where endurance rather than variety is part of the experience. Think of Techno Viking if he'd been an international corporate head hunter living in Dubai.

Here in Dubai, the dance scene is varied, but only within the parameters allowed by the brackets in which different social groups operate. The Ethiopians have their club, the Indians theirs, the Russians, the Singaporeans have theirs. The expat Europeans, Australians, South Africans and Americans mostly dance to chic, boutique music. That's the best way to encapsulate the genres that we're thinking of - clean, reliable, at first hearing possibly featureless, but after a while, a freedom appears within the framework.

Two Fingers in the Air - This Week's Free Lab Radio Show

11-midnight tonight we're airing the one and only mix put out by DJ Two Fingers this year. The reason it merits attention, apart from being a great mix, is that it's the only thing Two Fingers has produced this year, claiming "a year in the studio". This would not normally be significant but that Two Fingers is an alias for super-producer Amon Tobin. Tobin was on tour last year with his hyper-surreal DJ 'experience' ISAM. We caught the show at Camden Roundhouse, it was impressive, all enveloping and distant. The team working with Tobin created the most astounding projection mapping show perhaps of all time, while the DJ himself was mostly hidden inside the wall in a cube, only partially visible at moments during the show.

Two Fingers was originally a collaboration with fellow producer Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. Their first eponymous release came out in 2009 and heavily featured UK vocalist Sway.
The second album, Stunt Rhythms was a solo work by Tobin and was released worldwide by Big Dada in 2012. The most popular track from Stunt Rhythms is Fools Rhythm, included in Ninja Tune's 20th anniversary "XX" box set,
Recent works include the theme music for the BBC America/Space original series Orphan Black, composed by Two Fingers and also the release Vengeance Rhythm which comes with the most brilliant teddy-bear slaughter video (pictured, and posted here at the time) in 2012.

Tonight's mix "TF DJ SET SEPT 2013", is a self-released free download made available in January 2014. It was produced by Tobin in Montreal, and comes with this proclaimer: "As this will be mainly a studio year for Amon we are posting one of 2013's Two Fingers DJ sets for you to download. Fond memories, good times. Thanks to all who stepped out and got down to this!"

Amon Tobin Finger Painting

Yes, musicians make 'art'!

 This unnamed beauty is the result of Amon Tobin donating his finger print to artist Greg Angus, who then rendered the print creatively in oil and melted wax. To its credit it does look like the effect of sound on water, and that's intriguing. But it also looks like a tie-dye finger painting made on a computer. As it's the great electronic visionary producer, responsible for the likes of ISAM and other wonders however, you might not be satisfied with CDs, downloads, tee shirts, baseball hats and concert tickets...you might want to take your adoration up a notch. Here's the press release which makes some amazing claims:

These prints are based on Greg’s original encaustic paintings featuring the top electronic musicians in the world. The prints are a closed limited edition of 100, at 36” x 36” each, and they are hand signed by the artist Greg Angus and printed on the highest quality archival (museum quality) paper. Subsequently, the original paintings that these prints are derived from will be unveiled at an exhibition reception in Los Angeles in 2015. Exploring themes of identity in his work, the inspiration in Angus’ paintings are derived from fingerprints. In 2013, Angus met with Amon Tobin to collect his actual fingerprints. He subsequently manipulated them, developing interesting contours and shapes that he used to guide his painting. In his original paintings, his technique involves mixing oil paint with melted wax, (encaustic) and layering a myriad of colors over one another. He then scrapes and carves out his patterns creating texturally complex works. Earlier works have a close relation to the fingerprint Angus begins with, while more recent works have a looser, more organic interpretation. The work is rich with tactile detail, peaks, valleys, and ridges that characterize our distinctive physical stamp. Kinetic use of color is signature in Angus’ work. The high-saturation and brights vibrate with energy drawing us through many pathways in the image. Our natural inclination for individuality and our need to investigate and celebrate the diversity of experience on which we build our identities is reflected in Angus’ works, and reflected in his desire to honour truly exceptional individuals who have left their creative mark on the world.

Casiokids Come Back

We like this too much. Possibly ten of the 40 thousand Youtube views might have been traces of us. OK maybe not, but the tight compression and the rhythm with it's mixed in African drums is just amazing. It's liberating too to have absolutely no idea what the lyrics mean, the light flow of the synths over the near-tribal drums narrates a story of its own unencumbered by "Yeah, yeah, yeah baby" or whatever it is in Norwegian. The video is typically narrative for the a-ha-endorsed Casiokids too; this is a contemporary kind of altar boy, in the super-chichi-retro temple of adoration of everything vintage. Liberated by electromagnetic TV voodoo the kid disco dances his way to the self-awareness that comes with adulthood. With nothing released since 2011 the band seemed to have underground but they were touring, appearing in pubs in the North of England and now back in Scandinavia. More recent work by the group is even more lo-fi casio, playfully delivered. What news? Watch this space!

Lo Recordings label was founded in 1995 by Jon Tye. They are noted for their strong visual style thanks to Non-Format, with whom they work closely and won a D&AD award for several of their release sleeves.

Lo & Behold, the home of Lo Recordings, is also about esoteric events amongst other surprises. Flavio Nunes a film and sound enthusiast currently working at Lo Recordings, using video, photography and cine film in his practice. He also did a stint at no.w.here, a not-for-profit arts-space in Bethnal Green specialising in filming, developing and expanding 16mm and 8mm cine film. Nunes builds his own electronic musical instruments and experiments with accompanying visuals, contributing to the music-video industry.

In this age of quickly generated, pumped up digital files, it's refreshing to have someone willing to freak out on the dancefloor to more distant sounds. There's an undeniable fidelity in these obscure recordings, a pleasure to hear.
