This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mutant Jukebox

Iranian born Londoner Shervin Shaeri began his career writing music to picture for artists, directors, and photographers.

The creative director of the creative audio agency Mutant Jukebox, specialising in bespoke music composition, Mutant Jukebox has created this guest mix for Free Lab Radio.
"On being asked to create my first ever mix for Free Lab Radio I instantly felt a little tinge of nostalgia. In the early days of the station - which at that time resided in a tiny studio in Londons tin pan ally - where I applied for a volunteering program through uni, and was kindly taken on by the team. With a some experience in engineering and audio tech I quickly was able to help out. For me, a time of discovery.

My interest in experimental music started a couple of years earlier with a visit from a cousin of mine and her husband who lived out in LA. I clearly remember the day that I felt my 'sonic awareness' open up. Both had gone off for a couple of days and left me with a file of cds, and so i dived in. With hindsight it was a turning point, so the selection is a nod to that time featuring tracks by Alvo Noto and Ryoji Ikeda of Raster-Noton, Warp artists such as Boards of Canada and Plaid and Skam artists such as Bola and Quinoline Yellow."

Track List:
1. Even Spring - Plaid
2. Nothing Happens In June - Ulrich Schnauss
3. Sphere - Funckarma
4. Tank - Shuttle 358
5. In a Beautiful Place Out In the Country - Boards of Canada
6. Mapa - Murcof
7. Plotreturn - Quinoline Yellow

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Disquiet, Afternoon Music for Day or Night

Afternoon Music for Day or Night

This week founder of Disquiet Marc Weidenbaum brings us a special mix for Free Lab Radio. This seasoned selector and music reviewer put thought into this mix, as he is familiar with the Resonance104.4FM audience and has unfathomable archives, created by himself, at his disposal.

"This is mix of afternoon music that can be listened to at any time of the day — the work played here, 21 tracks in all by 13 artists, is generally ambient and electronic in nature, and yet it’s fairly rhythmic at the same time, some of the tracks more explicitly so than others. There are fractal algorithms from Erika Nesse, and refrigerator drones by Nystada. There’s elegantly layered sameness by Marcus Fischer and fourth-world blues by Yasuo Akai. Several of the recordings heard here are drawn from the music community called the Disquiet Junto, which I’ve moderated since 2012. The hour starts off with some brief dank techno miniatures by Vladimir Conch. Conch’s pieces are so brief, between 23 and 38 seconds each, that I’ve chosen to repeat a few of them, turning the five short original tracks into a suite of nine that begins where it ends."

Free Lab Radio Podcast: Dance is a Neuroscience

A mix by Fari B of some of the most sonically intriguing dance tunes in this year's playlist, plus new Nov-Dec releases. Moving through genres and sub-genres from 8-bit to nu-disco to Neurostep, it's a selection to end 2015.

Dance is a marriage of the representational capacity of language and the rhythmicity of music. Even though dance is a fundamental form of human expression, neuroscientists have given it relatively little consideration. The past decade, however, researchers have conducted the first brain-imaging studies of both amateur and professional dancers. These investigations address such questions as:
How do dancers navigate though space?
How do they pace their steps?
How do people learn complex series of patterned movements?

Playlist:

Streaming online & broadcasting on air on 104.4FM, at 11-midnight GMT (3-4am GST).
Repeats: Tuesday 4-5am GMT (7-8am GST)

Since 1968, Trojan Records has led the way in presenting the very best in classic Jamaican sounds. The labels releases have featured the best of Jamaican talent, with the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots andThe Maytals and The Inner Circle all included on its illustrious roster.
Earl began DJing in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton and was heavily influenced by the Trojan releases of the time. Today Earl Gateshead and Trojan Sound System tour the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Recent shows include Glastonbury, Outlook, Boomtownfair, Bestival, Rototom Festival and club events at London’s biggest venue; Fabric.

In the late 70s, in the spirit of the times Earl built his own sound system at the world famous Dive Bar in Soho, where he established a reputation across London. Earl had a 20 year residency at The Dive Bar, which was sadly bought to an end in 2002 when the venue was closed. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he was the resident Roots Reggae specialist.
In 2000 Earl organised and performed at a series of events called “Reggae Nights”. These legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, which lead him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the country and in high demand from international Reggae artists. He then went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others.

Invited to give a lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo, Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull.

#FreeLabRadio Podcast - Deep White Sound

deepwhitesound (DWS) an international online label of free experimental music, sent us the best and the breadth of their collective works for this week's show.

DWS promotes more challenging work available for free download than most sites at the moment. A community of artists working at the fringe of art, technology and society - their practices range from interdisciplinary work in new media, installation and performance to generative and web-based mediums that "expand the possibilities of how sound-based art is experienced, distributed and discussed." This way they do this is not just apparent in the audio, but many works are accompanied by imagery or feature as part of longer listening experiences, or are live takes from performances.

DWS mission statement: Female, queer and ethnic minority experimental artists comprise a woefully under-represented and under-supported demographic and thus are also of particular interest to DWS. That stated, DWS seeks and supports work from all people, everywhere, who wish to broaden the scope of what is possible.

Thanks to DB Amorin for the selection. Amorin is founder of deepwhitesound, born in Honolulu, HI USA and currently lived in Portland, OR USA. An experimental artist himself he supports a small, but evergrowing international community and, in an age when many working with digital distribution fight for copyrights Amorin works to "propagate the ideology that art should be free to access and share".

He currently works for ProjectGrow, an art studio and urban farm for adults with developmental disabilities and The Creative Music Guild, an all-volunteer non-profit organization facilitating creatively experimental performance in Portland, OR. As a visual and sound artist, his work typically deals with perception, identity and representation, using cheap reproduction methods and DIY techniques to explore malfunction and abstraction in form. The Music Video and Art

Labor45 - Electronic Toys
We're loving German experimental artists Labor45, who collaborate here with Spenza to create this u:ber video to Take Me To Your Leader. As nostalgically 80s and so German as it is, flashing influences of the visual aesthetic of Kraftwerk and sounding like something you couldn't quite put in a box. Following is their video and a little about them but first here are some thoughts their video has raised:

With new media art moving in a wider, yet more confluent direction and with viewing platforms diversifying all the time, the rise of MTV in the late 80s and capitalists like Lady Gaga who claim to create "art" in their music and videos has done little to influence the genre. Instead the area in which video art and the music video have blurred is one which was touched by enduring acts such as Kraftwerk and in the art world, and by the work of Nam June Paik of Fluxus in the art world who was part of a movement challenging conventions of art and music in public space. Didn't John Cage say that one way to write music was to study Duchamp? While the music video generally tends to allude to or add to the narrative, it can also transpose a music video from the realm of 'music' to 'art', and vice versa while contributing to a growing pool of work that celebrates and aesthetic driven by current trends in technology (going right back to Channel 4's The Chart Show, 1986 where videos were linked by their then state of the art computer graphics).

As the conventions of viewing video art change, moving out of the gallery online to anywhere one can fix a screen (recent 'public art' projects for London regeneration saw our own video streamed on loop in a run down estate in North London), the language of video art also changes. Yet is has never quite broken away from convention or explored the possible enough. Only new developments in technology and the occasionally brilliant directive (see Michel Gondry's video for Bjork's Declare Independence - which we post on here some years ago, who also plan to screen their new 40 minute 3D film in museums rather than any other kind of venue) push the medium of music video into the realm of art. Still, it is a blurred line that is as yet unexplored in any conclusive manner.

Labor45 are Barbara Herold, Katrin Petroschkat, both living in Munich . Their work is often about music, the reception and production of as well as where new date formats and digital advancements are heading:
"LABOR 45 is about artistic research on today's technical features and aims to find new possibilities for usage and expression from within the medium."

Spenza on the other hand are interested in sound, with limited but early work in visuals seemingly led by algorhythmic pulsing and basic visual programme coding, going back to 2010:
