This Week's Free Lab Radio - Muqata'a مُقاطعَة (Boycott), Palestine

This week's Free Lab Radio features a bespoke mix by Palestine/ USA-based music producer and performer Muqata'a (translates as Boycott). Muqata'a used to be part of Ramallah Underground until he began working solo on at first hip hop and now a more blended mix of hip hop and experimental electronica.

We've featured Muqata'a in the past and last November 2015 we travelled to Abu Dhabi's Noise of the Middle East festival where we played the same stage. With a modest array of sound manipulating gear, Muqata'a had the audience swaying to his mesmeric, unhurried sounds, sat on Persian carpets before the stage.

This week founder of Disquiet Marc Weidenbaum brings us a special mix for Free Lab Radio. This seasoned selector and music reviewer put thought into this mix, as he is familiar with the Resonance104.4FM audience and has unfathomable archives, created by himself, at his disposal.

"This is mix of afternoon music that can be listened to at any time of the day — the work played here, 21 tracks in all by 13 artists, is generally ambient and electronic in nature, and yet it’s fairly rhythmic at the same time, some of the tracks more explicitly so than others. There are fractal algorithms from Erika Nesse, and refrigerator drones by Nystada. There’s elegantly layered sameness by Marcus Fischer and fourth-world blues by Yasuo Akai. Several of the recordings heard here are drawn from the music community called the Disquiet Junto, which I’ve moderated since 2012. The hour starts off with some brief dank techno miniatures by Vladimir Conch. Konono No1 Meet Batida

This week to mark a new release, we are broadcasting a contemporary congolese dance music Free Lab Radio special.

Selected new electro-Congoloese alongside tracks by legendary band Konono (formed 1966) from Kinshasa, DRC who released "Konono No1 Meet Batida" this month. For the album Konono joined forces with acclaimed Angolan/ Portuguese artist Batida for the album. "Konono No1 Meet Batida" released on April 1, 2016 and was recorded in Batida’s garage-cum-studio in Lisbon, and reflects the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan music life. Also featured this week are Congolose drum 'n bass and other forms of right-sounding electronica.

About Konono No.1 The grammy award winning trio combine three electric likembé (a traditional instrument similar to the thumb piano or mbira) with voices, dancers, and percussion instruments  made out of items salvaged from a junkyard (this is something close to our heart). For some reason they also distinguish themselves by using a microphone carved out of wood fitted with a magnet from an automobile  and a gigantic horn-shaped amplifier!

Free Lab Radio Podcast - Booman vs. Iraq

Is there a place where naive fine art and home studio production meet...?

Tonight we sample an entire album by Bambooman, UK who has his latest release 'Dulcet' on Sonic Router. As a tangent, we end with two Iraqi folk songs to mark the first ever UK exhibition of Welcome to Iraq, the Iraq Pavillion contribution to the last Venice Biennial. It is the first ever show at Venice to feature artists from inside Iraq since 1976.

The work in Welcome to Iraq, currently on show at South London Gallery, is mostly all made from found objects and materials, as formal art education in Iraq still has not recovered since the foreign invasion and artists are generally self taught. From cardboard to recycled tires the sculptures are effectively parallel to the sampling and re-appropriated field recordings of young Bambooman.  Like these Iraqi artists Bambooman uses a colloquial audio palette to create some of the most interesting beats we've heard in a while.
