This Week's Free Lab Radio - Acid Arab Special

A exclusive mix from this French duo who've been producing and mixing tracks to feed their passion for Maghrebi, Egyptian and Middle Eastern tunes for some years now on a mega world tour that in March 2016 included a show in the Israel-controlled Old City in Jerusalem(!) as well as Tunis, Casablanca and Istanbul. Recently we aired a preview of their new release feat. Sofiane Saidi 'La Hafla' on our sister show Six Pillars, now for almost an hour of tunes sent in to us for a special broadcast on Resonance104.4FM.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - The David Bowie Mixpiece

Fritz Von Runte's experimental David Bowie mixpiece made on the eve of Bowie's death features abstract sounds, spoken word, remixes, reworkings and lesser known tracks.
 Von Runte, a DJ and Producer in Manchester, UK releases his own material under the anti-war non-profit label Marshall Records and is a remixer of British songwriters.

In 1996 Fritz was just 20, he founded Shalalá Records, an independent record label for electronic music, whose catalogue so far has reached over 80 releases.

"His work as a DJ was also very successful and prolific – Fritz even played Ibiza (that was when it actually meant something). Then, in 2003 Fritz founded Marshall Records, another independent label, with an explicit agenda: making records against the war, that was then commencing with the Iraq invasion. Marshall Records focuses on bootleg mixes and mash-ups, and its catalogue has achieved over 25 million downloads – most of it propelled by the internet phenomena The Beatles HATE.  Fritz continues to produce remixes, original music and he DJs from time to time.

 Fritz von Runte’s life has always been connected to music, one way or another. His father was a obsessive record collector, Jazz, Big Bands and Orchestras. He gave Fritz his first record player, a monophonic (!) portable one, at the age of 4 (!!). As a boy, Fritz was always the one responsible for directing the music in parties. He didn’t have a video game, never got into sports, basically was more interested in music than anything else. At the age of 15 he became a professional DJ, warming up parties in warehouses for thousands of people. When he was 18 he bought his first drum machine and one year later got a job in a studio, when he began to produce music."

This week your #FreeLabRadio producer played out on the beach here in Dubai, to a crowd of academics heavily involved in the electronic arts and young creatives living here in the UAE. ISEA2014, a roaming electronic arts festival is hosted this year by the United Arab Emirates. One visiting sound artist from Canada told me last night, "I would never dance to Love Shack, but that was the best damn remix I ever heard". 

As a nod then to the possibilities of reinventing the way we hear familiar music, this week we present the Magic Drum Orchestra mix made for their release by bandleader Bigga Bush.
