This Week's Free Lab Radio - For All the Sea the Land Remains

For All the Sea the Land Remains is a 44 minute long sound piece from Simon Coates.  The bespoke work for Free Lab Radio features field recordings from Dubai and Fujairah - both in the United Arab Emirates - Istanbul, Bangkok and Vientiane in Laos.

In addition to employing field recordings for this piece, Coates plays harmonica, keyboards and guitar alongside digitally-manufactured acousmatic sounds. For All the Sea the Land Remains samples the songs 'Shagufa' by Geeta Dutt (1953), 'Hum Aur Tum Aur Ye Khushi' by Surendra (from the 1940 film 'Alibaba') and 'Aahen Na Bharin Shikve Na Kiye' by Zeenat (1945). Another film that is samples is Parviz Kimiavi's 1970s film 'Oh, Protector of the Gazelle'. 

The English text at the start is read by UK performance artist Caroline Smith, and was written by Simon Coates.  The Arabic text towards the end is read by Sara Al Haddad and is a line from Jonny Town Mouse by Beatrix Potter...with vocal contributions by Denise Coates.

This Week's #FreeLabRadio Show - Experiments in Marrakech

Moroccan producer Abdellah M. Hassak presents a bespoke one hour mix for FreeLabRadio; DUBOSMIUM in Marrakech.

Using field recordings he has made in his country, samples and electronically produced sounds, Hassak's work, produced under the name DUBOSMIUM, is smoothly put together and unique.

Hassak is an active proponent of the Free Culture Movement and runs free workshops in Casablanca with a team of cultural activists. 

We first fell for his mix Carnival in Casbah which as soundscapes go (we've listened to so many over the years), is a great piece of work and naturally for Hassak, free to download.

Tonight's show is a mini-mix by Fari Bradley and a 35 minute guest piece by Jad Atoui, whose soundscape work occasionally crosses over into music.
Tracks tonight are from Persian Dubplates (UK/Iran), Satelliti (Italy) remixed by Vessels from Leeds, Non-Classical's Juice Vocal Ensemble (UK) and the Calgary Boy's Choir (Canada) singing a reworking of an Indian bhajan. 
 ::Jad Atoui:: Born in Lebanon, 1993 Jad Atoui is based in NY, where he produces music and experiments with electronic sounds. Jad has been composing audio pieces since 2008. Using his electronic gear, he creates a sound that fits somewhere between ambient, soundscape, garage and glitch and hashis work has featured in the magnificent Pompidou Center (2012, Paris). As a performer Jad Atoui has played with renowned artists like John Zorn, Igorrr, Ikue Morie, One man Nation, Tarek Atoui, Erik Friedlander and C-drick Kirdec.

 Black Sea Series is a fusion of influences from Beirut of new experiences lived in New York. The altered field recordings have been collected since 2011, and they express raw unedited sounds as they appear in nature, focusing on this disruption of perception related to the world surrounding us. The sonic feel in this body of work shifts from oriental to almost purely electronic, harsh yet hypnotizing sounds, which reveals the journey of life blooming, of a change, a voyage.
