A bespoke mix for Free Lab Radio by Cheh with tracks by Overshift, Ahmet Mecnun, Ahmet Mecnun, Aney F, Exander, Luis Mora, Giacomo De Falco and Hassio (col), Luca Lento and Nukem. Chech favours Techno and some of its derivatives.

 Abdalla Chahine a DJ and producer from Beirut, recently returned to Beirut's music scene after time in Abu Dhabi. He cites his influences as Richie Hawtin, Kruder and Dorfmeister and Trentmoller, Ricardo Villalobos and Steve Lawler amongst others. Cheh performs at Minimal Effort alongside other breakthrough DJs. In 2011, he released on the Lebanese label, VL Records.

New Free Lab Radio Podcast - 'Electro Congo' on ResonanceFM

This week to mark an important new release, we feature contemporary Congolese dance music on Electro Congo, a Free Lab Radio special.

Selected electro-Congolese tracks alongside derivatives of Congolese drum 'n bass and other forms of apt-sounding electronica, pepper an almost album-length listen to a new release by legendary Grammy award winning band Konono formed 1966, Kinshasa, DRC.

"Konono No1 Meet Batida" released this April 2016. For the album Konono who use instruments made with found objects, worked with acclaimed Angolan/ Portuguese artist Batida, in Batida’s garage-cum-studio in Lisbon, reflecting the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan music life. Also featured this week are derivatives of Congolese drum 'n bass and other forms of apt-sounding electronica.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Turkish Ladies on Records

 

 Polish record collector Kornelia Binicewicz lives in Turkey where she began Ladies on Records, a listening and digitising and uploading project for currently Turkish psychadealica from the 60s and 70s featuring the voices of Turkish women of the time.  The 60-70s saw a massive explosion in music all over the world which gave women the voice and platform with which to become renowned and express themselves not only musically,but also in fashion and the arts.

Binicewicz left her work in festivals in Poland to pursue a life in music in Turkey where she is now based. She was director of MiŚ Documentary Film Festival about Music for 8 years and program manager of the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow for a while. Binicewicz calls her interests “Various cultures and worlds caught in dusty records and blurred memories” and explores Turkish female music through avidly collecting records, interviews, DJing and writing.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - A Dorian Concept Bootleg

 I mini mix, bootlegs and Dorian Concept tracks to mark the concert tonight in the United Arab Emirates of the Dorian Concept Trio three-man band as part of the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp.

Austrian composer and producer Dorian Concept plays keys is an eclectic output that ranges from modal and free jazz to funk hiphop and electronica including ambient music.


Dorian Concept is also a member of the Austrian funk band Jacob's Salty and Bamboozling Ladder (JSBL) and toured as a keyboarder for Flying Lotus and collaborated with the Cinematic Orchestra.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Oriental Slap

Nuts One (Ωu†$ ∅Ω€), a Swiss music producer and mix-maker, decided for this mix to take a vinyl trip to the Middle-East, Levant and North Africa.

Here's a selection of 70's oriental psychedelic tracks from his collection from Turkey, Lebanon, Algeria, Iran, Israel and Egypt.

Nuts One and Someplinghave (France) have also self-released 7" vinyl records, embracing the homemade aesthetic in both appearance and sound.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - The David Bowie Mixpiece

Fritz Von Runte's experimental David Bowie mixpiece made on the eve of Bowie's death features abstract sounds, spoken word, remixes, reworkings and lesser known tracks.
 Von Runte, a DJ and Producer in Manchester, UK releases his own material under the anti-war non-profit label Marshall Records and is a remixer of British songwriters.

In 1996 Fritz was just 20, he founded Shalalá Records, an independent record label for electronic music, whose catalogue so far has reached over 80 releases.

"His work as a DJ was also very successful and prolific – Fritz even played Ibiza (that was when it actually meant something). He gave Fritz his first record player, a monophonic (!) portable one, at the age of 4 (!!). As a boy, Fritz was always the one responsible for directing the music in parties. He didn’t have a video game, never got into sports, basically was more interested in music than anything else. At the age of 15 he became a professional DJ, warming up parties in warehouses for thousands of people. When he was 18 he bought his first drum machine and one year later got a job in a studio, when he began to produce music."

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Endurance City

This week we explore minimal house, tech and synth-pop tracks tracks with reliably repetitive forms, and how these give people clubbers the confidence (and therefore the freedom) to dance?

Their mesmeric beats, by their very repetition become a kind of meditation, a small box in which the dancer moves shoulder to shoulder to a driving, seamless mix along with everyone else in a kind of flamboyantly stylish step class, where endurance rather than variety is part of the experience. Think of Techno Viking if he'd been an international corporate head hunter living in Dubai.

Here in Dubai, the dance scene is varied, but only within the parameters allowed by the brackets in which different social groups operate. The Ethiopians have their club, the Indians theirs, the Russians, the Singaporeans have theirs. The expat Europeans, Australians, South Africans and Americans mostly dance to chic, boutique music. That's the best way to encapsulate the genres that we're thinking of - clean, reliable, at first hearing possibly featureless, but after a while, a freedom appears within the framework.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Vaporwave

Vaporwave, a mushy, so-cheesey-they-are-cool series of adapted samples of '80s & '90s TV infomercial and corporate muzak, made today. On this week's show we play both good old fashioned, hi-fidelity vaporwave and progressive (adapted and made on new hard and software) vaporwave.

Samples are might be pitch or tempo shifted but they are still recognisable. Reimagined 80s Microsoft advert with a whole load of obsessive compression and reverb, tracks are often very short...Vaporwave examines the vapidity of mass mainstream media and its promises, the short-sightedness of libidinous 90s yuppie culture and celebrates the perennial nature of advertising most of its producers suffered growing up....

Other similar genres are chillwave, grave-wave,

sea-punk, witch-house and of course one that the ResonanceFM performing collective explored quite a bit in the 2013-14 hauntology.... Vaporwave often crosses into genre we've looked at before on Free Lab Radio, such as Chiptune and Brostep.
