New Free Lab Radio Podcast - 'Electro Congo' on ResonanceFM

This week to mark an important new release, we feature contemporary Congolese dance music on Electro Congo, a Free Lab Radio special.

Selected electro-Congolese tracks alongside derivatives of Congolese drum 'n bass and other forms of apt-sounding electronica, pepper an almost album-length listen to a new release by legendary Grammy award winning band Konono formed 1966, Kinshasa, DRC.

"Konono No1 Meet Batida" released this April 2016. For the album Konono who use instruments made with found objects, worked with acclaimed Angolan/ Portuguese artist Batida, in Batida’s garage-cum-studio in Lisbon, reflecting the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan music life. Also featured this week are derivatives of Congolese drum 'n bass and other forms of apt-sounding electronica.

Free Lab Takeover - DSM, Iran

Producer and DJ DSM, or Sasan b.1994 in Iran where he lives, returns to the airwaves with a truly fantastic mix that aims to elicit different types of feelings and emotions in the listener. 

 Using traditional Persian music, the sounds of nature sounds and his signature deep-house rhythms, DSM has edited some of the tracks and made this bespoke mix sent from Iran for Free Lab Radio this week.

Check out his last mix for us here. Since then, DSM has gone on a superb tangent into experimental sound. We hope Resonancefm has influenced him in some way!

Experimental Housewife's ambient-mix for Communikey Festival; a long-running cultural institution that promoted social, cultural and ecological innovation through creative process.

As the Festival came to an end this year Experimental Housewife created a lamentation for it’s end and as an ode to what is yet to come.

Featured: Segue, Charles Cohen, Neel’s modular abstractions and the flickering drones of Colorado-based artist Radere.

"In advance of the 2015 Communikey Festival — which takes place April 16-19 month in Boulder, CO — we tapped Experimental Housewife to record a mix showcasing the more ambient-leaning portion of the festival programming.
This year’s edition of the Communikey Festival is set to be our last, as we prepare to retire the format in order to focus on the next stage of their creative evolution. It’s a bittersweet end for a long-running cultural institution that has served to promote social, cultural and ecological innovation through creative process. As such, Experimental Housewife intended for this mix to serve as a lamentation for the festival’s end and an ode to what is yet to come.
Bookended by a pair of tracks from the lauded Silent Season artist Segue, the mix traverses a wide range of styles, from Charles Cohen and Neel’s modular abstractions to the flickering drones of Colorado-based artist Radere and beyond. The end result is an evocative mix that is at turns friendly and creepy, calling to mind the very atmosphere of the Front Range region itself as it moves through its shadowy soundscapes.

Lo Recordings label was founded in 1995 by Jon Tye. They are noted for their strong visual style thanks to Non-Format, with whom they work closely and won a D&AD award for several of their release sleeves.

Lo & Behold, the home of Lo Recordings, is also about esoteric events amongst other surprises. Flavio Nunes a film and sound enthusiast currently working at Lo Recordings, using video, photography and cine film in his practice. He also did a stint at no.w.here, a not-for-profit arts-space in Bethnal Green specialising in filming, developing and expanding 16mm and 8mm cine film. Nunes builds his own electronic musical instruments and experiments with accompanying visuals, contributing to the music-video industry.

Graphic designer to clubs and musicians Ali Augur visits the studio with his playlist. Free Lab Radio responds with several tracks left of that, while we interview Ali on his work and associations.

From fund raising exhibitions in art galleries to club night flyers Ali's work has a strong social leaning. On top of that his long history of designing has some proper names to drop in it!

Highlight: when Ali spots the graphic design for an MP3 on our Ipod, and we Crank It Up, revealing how particular to his taste our playlist has been, compared to "other stuff" we play out.
