This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mutant Jukebox

Iranian born Londoner Shervin Shaeri began his career writing music to picture for artists, directors, and photographers.

The creative director of the creative audio agency Mutant Jukebox, specialising in bespoke music composition, Mutant Jukebox has created this guest mix for Free Lab Radio.
"On being asked to create my first ever mix for Free Lab Radio I instantly felt a little tinge of nostalgia. In the early days of the station - which at that time resided in a tiny studio in Londons tin pan ally - where I applied for a volunteering program through uni, and was kindly taken on by the team. With a some experience in engineering and audio tech I quickly was able to help out. For me, a time of discovery.

My interest in experimental music started a couple of years earlier with a visit from a cousin of mine and her husband who lived out in LA. I clearly remember the day that I felt my 'sonic awareness' open up. Both had gone off for a couple of days and left me with a file of cds, and so i dived in. With hindsight it was a turning point, so the selection is a nod to that time featuring tracks by Alvo Noto and Ryoji Ikeda of Raster-Noton, Warp artists such as Boards of Canada and Plaid and Skam artists such as Bola and Quinoline Yellow."

1. Even Spring - Plaid

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Muqata'a مُقاطعَة (Boycott), Palestine

This week's Free Lab Radio features a bespoke mix by Palestine/ USA-based music producer and performer Muqata'a (translates as Boycott). Muqata'a used to be part of Ramallah Underground until he began working solo on at first hip hop and now a more blended mix of hip hop and experimental electronica.

Hear his latest dark electronica track here, below.

We've featured Muqata'a in the past and last November 2015 we travelled to Abu Dhabi's Noise of the Middle East festival where we played the same stage. With a modest array of sound manipulating gear, Muqata'a had the audience swaying to his mesmeric, unhurried sounds, sat on Persian carpets before the stage.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - Mix by Fari B

This week the sounds of the best electronica and experimental music from Fari B's listening rack. Elements of just a peppering of dubstep, epic, hip hop, contemporary classical, neurohop, moombhaton and even a remixed booty anthem.

Intelligent music for today's listener, dance in your bedrooms, dance in your cars, dance on the train with your headphones on, dance with your feet, your hands your head, but don't ignore the beat for that's when we've been reduced to nothing more than a brain carried in a body. Sway yourself into the present.

Free Lab Radio broadcasts Saturdays 11-midnight GMT (3am GST) repeats Tuesday 4am GMT (8am GST)

A bespoke set of house music, mixed in Iran for Free Lab Radio, by DJ Nesa Azadikhah.
"I used different styles of tracks for this mix: house , nu disco, techno, deep house... all tracks were chosen from international music. The mix adapts to changes in mood for the audience. It was mixed in Ableton Live, and I have also edited and overlayed some of the tracks.
The drawing here is a still frame of a video animation which I used last time on Free Lab Radio also as it's a source of inspiration for me. It was a collaboration between my sister and I, using collage as a technique."
