This Week's Free Lab Radio - Aeli, Tunis

Born and raised in Tunis, from Paris and now in Dubai, Aeli would call himself a 'neo hip-hop' Producer and DJ. 

For his first release “Palimpsest” he invited US and French rappers Crash Ddz and Melo Mendes to collaborate. Now working on instrumental music, Aeli released a second album in January 2016  “Late Future Calls” on digital, CD and USB.

Aeli’s music is inspired by Future Beats and the trap sounds of artists from Soulection, Jakarta Records and Plug Research. His work is while evolving, remains influenced by bands such as Nine Inch Nails and The Mars Volta drawing on their cross-boundary, total-freedom approach while maintaining a unique sound.

This selection made for Free Lab Radio features unexpected sounds fro, his ideas for experiments, unreleased and unknown tracks. "As my productions now are about Hip-Hop, I wanted to highlight the other part of me that might explain my approach to composing."

Performing live Aeli has shared stages with artists such as Daedelus and Iamnobodi during Sole DXB, Dubai and took part in Red Bull Academy Bass Camp in Dubai 2016. Aeli uses  controllers and synthesisers when he performs.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - A Dorian Concept Bootleg

 I mini mix, bootlegs and Dorian Concept tracks to mark the concert tonight in the United Arab Emirates of the Dorian Concept Trio three-man band as part of the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp.

Austrian composer and producer Dorian Concept plays keys is an eclectic output that ranges from modal and free jazz to funk hiphop and electronica including ambient music.


Dorian Concept is also a member of the Austrian funk band Jacob's Salty and Bamboozling Ladder (JSBL) and toured as a keyboarder for Flying Lotus and collaborated with the Cinematic Orchestra.

This Week's Free Lab Radio - For All the Sea the Land Remains

For All the Sea the Land Remains is a 44 minute long sound piece from Simon Coates.  The bespoke work for Free Lab Radio features field recordings from Dubai and Fujairah - both in the United Arab Emirates - Istanbul, Bangkok and Vientiane in Laos.

In addition to employing field recordings for this piece, Coates plays harmonica, keyboards and guitar alongside digitally-manufactured acousmatic sounds. For All the Sea the Land Remains samples the songs 'Shagufa' by Geeta Dutt (1953), 'Hum Aur Tum Aur Ye Khushi' by Surendra (from the 1940 film 'Alibaba') and 'Aahen Na Bharin Shikve Na Kiye' by Zeenat (1945). Another film that is samples is Parviz Kimiavi's 1970s film 'Oh, Protector of the Gazelle'. 

The English text at the start is read by UK performance artist Caroline Smith, and was written by Simon Coates.  The Arabic text towards the end is read by Sara Al Haddad and is a line from Jonny Town Mouse by Beatrix Potter...with vocal contributions by Denise Coates.

Brian May, one of the wonderful producers submitting audio for our Six Pillars radio station at Art Dubai, has created this below. The Sonic Network series is part of an ongoing international collaboration between Aslanidis and May with installations staged at Dr Julius Gallery, Berlin in 2011, plus at New York’s White Box Gallery & Kunsthalle Beacon in Upstate New York during 2012. Sonic Network no.11 + a composition by Brian May is on permanent display in the Hamer Hall, Victorian Arts Centre Melbourne.
